Magma Floor Lamp

Inspiration / Process

I spent six weeks in Telluride, surrounded by slot canyons, sandstone boulders, and arroyos. I was immersed in the red of Colorado. I wanted to make a lamp inspired by these landscapes.

Right after, I was playing around with expanding foam, and a lightbulb went off. This was largely a material / process driven design.

The Final Product

16” x 13” x 52”

Polyurethane Foam, Chicken Wire, Resin, Crushed Colorado Red Sandstone.

The surface is opaque. It is rocky and mottled, with flashes of sheen and pockets of matte finish. A shaped sandstone. But then you plug in the lamp and a surprising, vibrant light erupts.

It feels imminently comforting and ancestrally familiar, but foreign and alien all the same – like flames licking the walls of prehistoric caves, or a Moroccan surf lounge you’ve visited in a disorganized dream.
