Magma Table Lamp

Ideation / Considerations.

The form was simple enough - a scaled down version of the Magma Floor Lamp, with a top surface wide enough to act as a side table. The main consideration was keeping the strange alien nature of the original, as well as the visual tension between symmetry and asymmetry, organic and planned.

After deciding on the form, the project was focused on reproducibility and mold making. How could I pump these out?

The First Mold

The first mold was a two part mold made of foam and plaster, where I could form the foam around the two parts, release each, and be left with a hollow shell. The foam would not release, and to demold I had to cut vertically. The exterior surface also had to be extensively processed.

The Second Mold

The second mold is a 3d printed 34 part mold designed to produce a finished shell, with minimal post processing required. I didn’t use silicon both for pricing and for stability in the pour, given the height of the shell.

The Final Product

14” x 13” x 27”.

Polyurethane Foam, Crushed Colorado Red Sandstone, Resin.
