Cairn Chair

In the summer of 2024, I attended a 2 week woodworking workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. During this time, I challenged myself to design and build a chair.

The large boulders off coastal Maine looked like the slicked rocks on the banks of the Eagle River, they stacked atop one another like cairns on the tops of 14er’s. These seemingly delicate stacks of massive stones — on the banks of the Eagle, on the coast of Maine, on the tops of mountains — were the jumping off point for this design.

Construction

At Haystack, I completed all joinery, as well as the basic shaping. The photo with the maquette in the seat is the final photo at Haystack. Finishing and glue up was done in my home shop.

The Finished Chair

24” x 26” x 21”.

Future Iterations

I want to create a high back version of this design, as well as a side table / chair combo that more directly references the Eagle River.
